According to BERNAMA reported on 5 July 2025, The National Sports Institute (ISN) has suggested that all training centres for athletes especially badminton courts, should have an automated external defibrillator (AED). This comes after the sudden death of China’s junior badminton player Zhang Zhi Jie, who collapsed during a match in Yogyakarta on 30 June 2024.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said ISN had contacted her about this and is now discussing with local councils (Pihak Berkuasa Tempatan , PBT) to make AEDs part of the safety requirements at training centres.
“This is important for athlete safety. Some councils already have this rule, so we need further discussion,” she said during a community cycling event in Sungai Bakap.
Yeoh also said that it is not enough to just place AEDs at the centres, there must also be trained staff who know how to use them in an emergency.
